Belcastro is a “beautiful city”,
and an “old city” according to
Italian historians. It’s
distant past has roots that have
risen slowly from Magnagrecia
times. It is the birthplace of
Saint Tomas d’Aquino and Joseph
Poerio, and has given so much to
both Christian/Catholic and
secular laic Italy.
Belcastro was a medieval
village, and the Bishop had his
primary residence there.
Therefore, it contains a number
of historic monuments of varied
eras that only very few towns in
Calabria can claim. Visitors can
get a glimpse of the past by
viewing these architectural
pearls. Some examples are the
castle of Counts d’Aquino or the
palace of the Poerio family, and
many others. View the
art.
Belcastro is
a city famous for olive oil, a
blessing that only a hilled
countryside can offer (after a
great deal of effort, of
course). Belcasto also has a
stretch of land – “Fieri” or
“Condoleo” - that reaches the
Ionic Sea. But, above all,
Belcastro is a place of history,
theory, memories and
hospitality. You can easily
reach it from Highway 106, at
the base of the Sila Piccola.
